Doha International Airport Expansion

Doha, Qatar

NEA◦POLI was appointed by Meinhardt UK to support the Foster + Partners team on the New Doha International Airport (NDIA) project, based on the expansion of Hamad International Airport (HIA). The scope included expansion of the existing processor building, the addition of two new terminal concourses (D and E), and integration with the Doha Metro Red Line. The terminal’s annual capacity was planned to increase from 30 to 53 mppa, with a completed terminal area exceeding 1 million m².

NEA◦POLI delivered the building energy model for the project and supported the design of the signature domed garden (The Orchard) through in-house CFD modelling to optimise the cooling strategy and occupant comfort. The CFD simulations incorporated solar radiation gains, occupant sensible and latent loads, and plant evapotranspiration to assess airflow distribution, temperature stratification and thermal comfort performance, informing refinement of the space-conditioning approach.

The model geometry was developed from Foster + Partners’ CAD drawings and detailed using MEP and building fabric information provided by Meinhardt as the project’s mechanical and electrical engineer.
