When Malaysia Airports Holdings determined to build a major expansion of Penang International Airport, it launched a design competition, soliciting expertise from Malaysia and around the world.
Malaysia-based Ainul Rahman Architect (ARA) teamed up with NEAPOLI and Arup Engineering to win the design competition. As NEAPOLI’s Stellios said in a statement: “Malaysia Airports called up on teams from across the country and around the world to lead PIA’s historic expansion, and our team answered that call.”
The project is now entering the first phase of an ambitious development project, which will expand the airport’s capacity, enabling it to serve up to 16 million passengers per year over five years. NEAPOLI’s scope includes optimising the design and engineering systems for maximum occupant comfort and utility savings. The projects will aim for Gold Level with the LEED, GreenRE or GBI Green Building certification bodies.
This will add another International Airport project into NEAPOLI’s portfolio which includes the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 and Doha International Airport Expansion.
