ams OSRAM Kulim Achieves Historic LEED Gold Certification

Setting new benchmarks for sustainable manufacturing

Kuala Lumpur, 25 June 2025.

Breaking Records in Green Manufacturing

ams OSRAM’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Kulim has officially achieved LEED v4 BD+C Gold Certification, marking a historic milestone for sustainable industrial development in Malaysia. With an impressive 66 points – six points above the minimum Gold threshold – this achievement sets multiple records that position Malaysia as a leader in sustainable manufacturing.

A Triple Crown of Achievements

The Kulim facility has earned three distinguished recognitions:

  1. Malaysia’s Largest LEED-Certified Industrial Manufacturing Project
The facility represents the most significant industrial manufacturing project to achieve LEED certification in the country to date.
  2. Highest LEED Score in Category
With 66 points, the project holds the record for the highest number of LEED points achieved by any industrial manufacturing unit in Malaysia.
  3. Perfect Water Efficiency Performance
The facility achieved a flawless 11 out of 11 points in Water Efficiency, positioning it as a strong candidate for LEED Zero Water certification – which would be the first of its kind in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

Technical Excellence Breakdown

The certification success was built on robust sustainable design across multiple categories:

  • Water Efficiency: 11/11 points (Perfect Score)
  • Energy and Atmosphere: 23/33 points
  • Location and Transportation: 11/16 points
  • Sustainable Sites: 7/10 points
  • Indoor Environmental Quality: 5/16 points
  • Innovation and Regional Priority Credits : 8/10 points
  • Integrative Process: 1/1 point

Looking Toward Zero Water

The facility’s perfect Water Efficiency score opens an exciting pathway toward LEED Zero Water certification. If pursued, this would represent another Malaysian first and establish the facility as a pioneer in water stewardship across Southeast Asia, where no LEED Zero Water certified projects currently exist.

Partnership for Excellence

This achievement was made possible through the collaboration between ams OSRAM and NEAPOLI, the sustainability consulting firm that guided the certification process.

Multiplying Environmental Impact

Beyond its own sustainable operations, the Kulim facility is amplifying its environmental contribution through its core mission: producing highly efficient LED light chips that help thousands of buildings worldwide reduce their carbon footprint. This creates a powerful multiplier effect where the facility’s sustainable manufacturing processes produce components that enable energy savings far beyond its own walls.

Every LED chip manufactured in Kulim contributes to global energy efficiency, as LED technology typically uses 75% less energy than traditional incandescent lighting and lasts 25 times longer. But the impact extends even further – ams OSRAM’s optoelectronic products support the transport transition to e-mobility, improve road safety, enable affordable healthcare applications, and power intelligent, energy-saving plant lighting for resource-efficient food production.

Aligned with Global Sustainability Goals

The Kulim facility’s LEED Gold achievement directly supports ams OSRAM’s ambitious corporate sustainability commitments. As part of their Operations Sustainability Program launched in 2023, the company has set a bold target of achieving carbon-neutral production by 2030. By 2028, energy consumption and emissions at their semiconductor sites will be reduced by 20% through efficiency measures, with electricity supply converted to 100% renewable energy.

As a supporter of the UN Global Compact, ams OSRAM aligns its business activities with universally acknowledged sustainability principles. The Kulim facility exemplifies this commitment, demonstrating that their vision to “create sustainable added value with innovative lighting and sensor solutions” is not just aspirational – it’s operational reality.

Industry Impact

The Kulim facility’s success establishes a new benchmark for industrial manufacturing in Malaysia and demonstrates that large-scale production can operate in harmony with environmental stewardship. This achievement positions Malaysia as a regional leader in sustainable manufacturing practices and may inspire similar initiatives across Southeast Asia.

The ams OSRAM Kulim facility’s LEED Gold certification represents more than an environmental achievement – it’s a tangible step toward the company’s 2030 carbon-neutral production goal and a testament to how innovative manufacturing can serve both economic and environmental objectives.
